MRI Frequently Asked Questions

Q
If it so safe why am I the only person in the room?
A
The magnetic field has not been shown to be dangerous but there are a number of reasons why you are left in the room alone:
  • You may have 1 or as many as six or more scans in a lifetime the radiographers would be potentially exposed to thousands and this could just possibly have an effect on health
  • The magnetic field affects the computer and this therefore has to be separated from the examination room
  • Things such as watches, electronic diaries, coins etc are all affected by the field and could be dangerous to you and the radiographer
Q
Will I be magnetic afterwards?
A
No the magnetic field only lasts while you are in the room.
Q
Can I drive or operate machinery?
A
Yes, although if you have had an injection we advise you to wait for about an hour. Some people have a reaction to the substance we use which may make them feel unwell and if this happens it usually happens soon after the injection. Some patients may need a sedative and if so we will give you particular advice at the time.
Q
Do I have to prepare for the examination?
A
Most patients for MRI require no preparation but for some types of MRI you will need to drink a liquid which contains special elements which will allow better visualisation of some organs.
