Mould Room Welcome

Welcome to the mould room. Sorry about the weird names we're using here. Like most weird things all this has a lot to do with history, which we won't go into. Lets first explain the words.

A shell, sometimes called a beam direction shell (BDS) and sometimes called a mask, is like a splint made out of clear plastic. It is used to make sure that you are treated in exactly the same position each day. The idea is that the shell fits you perfectly around the part that we are treating and so we can fix the shell (and you!) to the couch under the treatment machine. Shells are often used for patients with cancers of the head and neck, but may be used for tumours at other sites. The mould room is where shells are made and fitted.
